There are a lot of people who do not have any idea when it comes to fillings when they go to a dentist. Many people think that there is no need to learn about them though. Fillings can affect the way your teeth appears so it is important. Fillings are important since dentists use them to fill up cavities. You get tooth cavities when the enamel of your teeth is eroded by the food you eat and the bacterial growth. What your dentist will do is to remove the decayed part of the tooth and then the cavity is filled with the chosen filling. Read on and learn about the various dental fillings today.

Number one, we have metal fillings. These are very durable and long lasting. You can also choose cast gold but it can be very expensive although you will be assured of its quality. Another metal filling you can have is silver or amalgam fillings. They are not pricey, but they last a long time as well. The downside of having amalgam as your filing is that they do not match the color of your teeth. If you choose this type of filling, it would be best if it is placed at your back teeth.

Second, we have composite fillings. This is what dentists use today. The material bonds nicely to the teeth and lasts for as long as ten years before revisiting needs to be done. It is the most reasonable priced material and will look more natural than other materials. This material is used in a lot of procedures that dentists do. The only downside to this material is that it can be prone to chipping.

Third, you can opt for a ceramic filling. Ceramic filling is one of the best natural looking filling. They are resistant to stain and lasts much longer than most fillings. It can be pretty expensive though. It can even be pricier than gold fillings.

So there you have some of the more common fillings used for your teeth today. Remember that fillings are different from each other. It is therefore important that you consider the type of filling that you would want based on your budget and service life of the filling. Better ask your dentist about your options concerning the dental fillings.
